Plastic Collection: A Transparent and Essential Solution

At GreenPerks, we’re proud to collaborate with partners who go beyond collecting plastic waste—they ensure it is responsibly tracked, sorted, and recovered, creating real impact for the environment and local communities.

But one question we often hear is: What happens to the waste once it’s collected?

To answer this, our partners use a detailed track-and-trace system to ensure full transparency at every stage of the plastic recovery process. From collection to verified recovery, here’s how they make it happen.

1. Collecting the Plastic

The journey begins in vulnerable regions like India and Indonesia, where waste is often collected directly from households or during beach cleanups.

Here’s how the process works:

Scan and log: Collection crews scan a QR code at each household, opening an app to register their location and check-in.

Weigh the waste: Waste handed over is placed on small scales and photographed to record the weight. This image helps monitor normal weight distributions.

Geo-location verified: The team logs the exact collection location to ensure accuracy.

Aggregate and transport: The waste is tracked in real time as it moves to a Material Recovery Facility (MRF), where it’s weighed again for cross-verification.

This meticulous process ensures nothing is missed or tampered with en route.

2. Sorting the Plastic

At the Material Recovery Facility, the waste is carefully sorted into:

Recyclables: Sent to nearby recycling plants to be reused.

Non-recyclables: Sent to co-processing facilities, where they are safely turned into fuel.

Every step of the sorting process is logged using the track-and-trace system, ensuring precise monitoring of volumes. This “mass balance” approach allows our partners to spot anomalies, prevent fraud, and maintain full transparency.

3. Final Recovery and Verification

Once sorted, the non-recyclables are transported to co-processing facilities. Before recovery begins, engineers conduct thorough lab tests to measure:

Moisture content: Ensures accurate plastic credit calculations (no one pays for water weight!).

Calorific value: Helps plants create the necessary fuel for safe recovery.

Contamination levels: Detects problematic materials like chlorine (found in PVC), which can harm the environment and facilities.

Each truckload is weighed, logged, and verified multiple times—from the sorting centre to its arrival at the co-processing plant. The result? A rigorous process that guarantees every piece of collected waste is tracked, managed, and accounted for.

Why It Matters

This level of detail might seem excessive, but it’s essential for maintaining trust and delivering measurable impact. By tracking every stage of plastic collection and recovery, our partners provide the transparency brands need to see the real-world outcomes of their sustainability efforts.

Their work not only prevents plastic pollution but also supports local waste management systems, improving living standards in coastal communities and contributing to a fair circular economy.
